Whether you're solving your first Wordle or you're a veteran chasing that perfect 2-guess solve, these 12 tips will sharpen your game immediately. Based on data from thousands of Wordle Unlimited games played on WordlyPlay.
Beginner Tips (Start Here)
1. Always Start With the Same Word
Picking a random first word every time is the biggest beginner mistake. Choose one strong opener and use it every single game. Consistency lets you build intuition for what the color patterns mean. Our recommended starters: CRANE, STARE, RAISE, or SLATE. See our full best starting words analysis.
2. Vowels First, Consonants Second
Most 5-letter words have 2-3 vowels. Your first 1-2 guesses should test as many vowels as possible. Once you know which vowels are in the word, the consonants fall into place much faster.
3. Read the Keyboard Colors
The on-screen keyboard highlights every letter you've tried: green (confirmed), yellow (in word, wrong spot), gray (not in word). Before each guess, scan the keyboard to make sure you're not accidentally reusing a gray letter.
4. Don't Panic on Guess 3
Many players feel pressure by guess 3 if they haven't found much. Relax — you still have 4 guesses left. Guess 3 is actually the most important information-gathering guess. Use it wisely rather than desperately.
Intermediate Tips
5. Think About Letter Position, Not Just Letters
Knowing a letter is "in the word" is only half the puzzle. Where does it go? Use positional frequency: E is most common in position 5. S is most common in position 1. A and O favor positions 2-3. This knowledge dramatically narrows your options.
6. Watch for Double Letters
Many players forget that letters can repeat. Words like SPEED, CREEP, BELLE, LOOSE, and TEETH all have doubles. If your guesses aren't working, consider whether a letter appears twice.
7. Learn Common Word Endings
Recognizing patterns saves guesses. The most common 5-letter word endings:
- -IGHT: LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT
- -OUND: BOUND, FOUND, MOUND, ROUND, SOUND
- -ATCH: BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, WATCH
- -ASTE: HASTE, PASTE, TASTE, WASTE
- -ANGE: RANGE, MANGE
8. Avoid Rare Letters Early
Letters like Q, X, Z, J, and K appear in very few 5-letter words. Never use them in your first 2 guesses unless you already have strong evidence they're in the word.
Advanced Tips
9. Use the "Two-Word System"
Commit to a fixed two-word opening that tests 10 unique letters. Best combos:
- CRANE + SPOUT — tests C,R,A,N,E,S,P,O,U,T
- SLATE + PRION — tests S,L,A,T,E,P,R,I,O,N
After two guesses, you know the status of 10 letters. Most puzzles are solvable by guess 3 with this system. Practice it in Wordle Unlimited mode.
10. Play Hard Mode to Build Better Habits
Hard mode forces you to use all confirmed clues in every guess. While restrictive, it teaches disciplined thinking. Read our complete hard mode guide for strategies.
11. Warm Up Before the Daily
Play 2-3 warm-up rounds in Unlimited mode before attempting the Daily Challenge. Your brain needs to "activate" its word-pattern recognition. Cold-starting on the daily is how streaks get broken.
12. Learn From Your Losses
When you fail a puzzle, analyze what went wrong. Did you miss a common pattern? Waste a guess on rare letters? Forget about double letters? Each loss is a lesson that makes your next 100 games better.
