The Daily Challenge: Complete Guide to Ranking, Rewards, and Strategy

I've completed 167 consecutive Daily Challenges. Some I nailed in 2 guesses. Others made me sweat through all 6. But I never missed a day — because the Daily Challenge is the single most rewarding thing you can do in WordlyPlay.

How the Daily Challenge Works

Every day at midnight (local time), a new word is selected for the entire player base. Everyone solving the Daily Challenge on the same day gets the same word. You have one attempt — once you start, you can't restart or retry. Whatever happens in those 6 guesses (or fewer) is your result.

After solving (or failing), you see a results screen with:

  • Your solve time and number of guesses
  • Your ranking among all players who've completed today's challenge
  • An option to share your result grid

How Ranking Works

Your daily rank is determined by a two-factor scoring system:

  1. Primary: Number of guesses. A player who solves in 2 guesses always ranks above a player who solved in 3, regardless of time.
  2. Secondary: Solve speed. Among players who solved in the same number of guesses, the faster solver ranks higher.

This means a slow 2-guess solve beats a fast 3-guess solve. Accuracy is always prioritised over speed — but speed is the tiebreaker.

Strategies for Top Daily Rankings

1. Play early in the day. Not for ranking advantage (the rank is dynamic) but because playing when you're fresh leads to better performance. Most of my best finishes happened before 9 AM.

2. Use your best opening word. Consistency matters. Don't experiment with new openers on the Daily Challenge — use what you know works.

3. Take time on guess 2. After your opener, pause for 10-15 seconds to fully process the feedback before typing. A thoughtful second guess often makes the difference between a 3-guess and a 5-guess finish.

4. Consider powerups for top-3 attempts. If you have strong feedback after 2 guesses and sense a possible 3-guess solve, a 1-gem Hint can push you to that finish. A top-3 daily finish pays back the gem investment several times over.

Sharing Your Daily Result

The share feature generates a visual grid (the familiar coloured squares) with your stats. Sharing earns gems — 1 gem per daily share, plus 2 gems for sharing into supported platforms. If you're sharing anyway (and Wordle trained all of us to share), you might as well earn from it.
