How to host a Wordle tournament with rules, scoring and a live bracket

To host a Wordle tournament, pick a format, share one link and let the bracket run itself. A WordlyPlay Tournament room takes up to 100 players. Everyone plays one to three qualifying words, the best 4 to 64 are seeded into a one-on-one knockout, and the first to solve each match goes through. Players join free from any browser, and a 40-person office cup is over in under 20 minutes.

How a Wordle tournament runs

Start whenever you are ready: with 2 players or 100. Or set a date and time and it starts by itself.

  1. Step 1
Set it upA Tournament card, your words, now or later.
    More

Get a Tournament card (50 gems), then choose one to three qualifying words, random or your own, and the time per match. Start whenever you like, or set a date and time and the tournament starts by itself.

  2. Step 2
Share the linkA 5-letter code, a link and a QR code.
    More

Send the link to your group chat, calendar invite or stream chat, or put the QR code on a screen. Players join free with a nickname: no accounts and nothing to install.

  3. Step 3
Start when you are ready2 players or 100: you decide.
    More

Press Start as soon as at least two players are in. Nobody has to wait for a full room, and the bracket sizes itself to the players you have.

  4. Step 4
QualifiersThe same words for everyone, at once.
    More

Everyone plays the qualifying words at the same moment. Fewer guesses score more, and the next word starts as soon as everyone has finished.

  5. Step 5
Knockout to a championOne word per match. First to solve goes through.
    More

The best players are seeded into one-on-one matches, round after round, to one champion. Players who are out watch the bracket live, and you can download the results afterwards.

Three ways to run a Wordle competition, from a lunch-break knockout to a week-long league.

Tournament

The full tournament. Everyone plays the qualifying words, then the best go into a seeded bracket. Best for offices, schools and big groups, because nobody is out after one bad word.

Straight knockout

Any room card

No qualifiers: the bracket starts at once with a random draw, and byes when the numbers don't fit. Best for a quick lunch-time cup with 8 or 16 people.

One room for the whole week: play a Race game each evening and the room keeps a running score across games. Best for remote teams and family groups in different time zones.

Wordle tournament rules you can copy

Paste these into your invite so nobody argues about the final. They describe exactly how WordlyPlay scores and settles every match.

  1. Same word, same moment. Every player gets the same word at the same time. Nobody can see anyone else's letters.
  2. Qualifier points. Solve in 1 guess: 60 points. 2 guesses: 50. 3: 40. 4: 30. 5: 20. 6: 10. Solving early adds up to 3 bonus points. Miss the word and you score the most green letters you had in one guess.
  3. Who makes the bracket. The top 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 players by points go through, whichever is the largest that fits. They are seeded so number 1 plays the lowest seed.
  4. Matches. One word per match, both players at once. The first to solve goes through.
  5. Tie-breaks. If neither player solves it, the better best guess wins: more green letters, then more yellows, then whoever made that guess first. If neither player guessed at all, the higher seed goes through.
  6. The clock. In a hosted tournament room every match has the same time limit (1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes). When time runs out, the tie-break decides.
  7. Hard mode (if the host turns it on). Every letter you find must be used in your next guesses.
  8. Fair play. No solvers, no word lists and no shouting answers across the office. The host can remove a player.

How big will my Wordle bracket be?

The bracket is the largest size that fits your players. Times are the longest a tournament can take with three qualifying words and 2-minute matches; it is usually quicker, because a word ends as soon as everyone is done.

2โ€“3players
Final only1 round (the final) ยท about 9 min
4โ€“7players
Bracket of 42 rounds ยท about 11 min
8โ€“15players

Want everyone in the bracket? Use a straight knockout instead: everyone plays from round one after a random draw.

Your own tournament or the Grand Slam?

The Grand Slam is WordlyPlay's public Wordle tournament, every Saturday and Sunday at 1, 8 and 11 PM ET, open to everyone, with titles for the winners. A Tournament room is private: your players, your words, your start time. For quick games with strangers, try Battle Royale.

Questions people ask

How do you host a Wordle tournament?

Get a Tournament card, choose one to three qualifying words and a start time, and share the room link. Players join free with a nickname, play the qualifiers together, and the best 4 to 64 go into a live knockout bracket until one champion is left.

What are the rules of a Wordle tournament?

Everyone plays the same word at the same time. Qualifiers score 60 points for one guess down to 10 for six, plus up to 3 for solving early. The top players are seeded into a one-on-one bracket, and the first to solve each match goes through.

How do you make a Wordle bracket?

Rank players by their qualifier points and take the largest group that fits a bracket: 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64. Pair number 1 with the lowest seed, number 2 with the second lowest, and so on. A Tournament room does this for you automatically.

How do you break a tie in Wordle?

If neither player solves the word, compare their best guesses: more green letters wins, then more yellow letters, then whoever made that guess first.

How long does a Wordle tournament take?

Usually 10 to 20 minutes with 2-minute matches, and up to about 40 minutes with 5-minute matches and 100 players.

Can we have a Wordle competition at work?

Yes. It needs no accounts or installs, works on work laptops and phones, and a 40-person cup fits in a 30-minute calendar slot. Set a start time and it begins on its own.

Do I have to wait for everyone to join?

No. You can start as soon as two players are in, or wait for 50 or 100. The bracket uses the largest size that fits the players you have.

Can I play in my own tournament?

Yes. The host plays like everyone else. Only a teacher in a classroom watches from the projector instead.

Can I stream a Wordle tournament?

Yes. In the lobby, tap ๐Ÿ“บ to open the stream view: the code and QR code while players join, then the qualifiers and the live bracket. Show it on a TV or projector, or add it to OBS as a browser source. It watches the room without taking a playerโ€™s place.

Can I schedule the tournament for later?

Yes, up to 30 days ahead. Players can join the room early, and it starts by itself at the set time.

Can you play a Wordle tournament for money?

Not on WordlyPlay. Tournament rooms have no entry fees and no cash prizes. The champion gets the podium and the bragging rights.

Do players need an account?

No. Players join with the link or code and a nickname. Only the host needs an account and a Tournament card.

Is there an official Wordle tournament?

The New York Times does not run one. WordlyPlay runs a public weekend tournament, the Grand Slam, and lets you host private ones.
