What Is 6 Letter Wordle?

6 Letter Wordle is Wordle with a six-letter hidden word. You get 6 guesses, and after each one the tiles turn green, yellow or gray to show which letters are right. The game above is unlimited: when one word ends, the next one starts, so there is no daily wait and nothing to sign up for.

The answers come from 2,375 everyday six-letter words that we checked by hand, from ABACUS to ZYGOTE, with no plain plurals. You can guess any of 15,246 real six-letter words.

You may also know it as six letter Wordle, or Wordle with 6 letters.

SATIRE and COLUMN give enough clues to find CASTLE on the third guess.

How to Play 6 Letter Wordle

  1. Type a six-letter word with your keyboard or the keys on screen, then press Enter.
  2. Read the colors. Each tile shows how close that letter is.
  3. Use the clues in your next guess. The keyboard keeps track of the letters you have ruled out.
  4. Find the word in 6 guesses or fewer, then press the new-word button for the next one.
A
Green: right letter, right spot
B
Yellow: in the word, wrong spot
C
Gray: not in the word

Example game

The answer is BOTTLE. SATIRE finds a T in the third spot and an E at the end. COLUMN adds an O in second place and a yellow L. Only one word in the list fits all of that, so the third guess wins.

Best Starting Words for 6 Letter Wordle

We tested opening words against all 2,375 answers and counted how many answers are still possible once the colors come back. The fewer left, the better the opener. These are the best ones that can also be the answer:

Starting wordAnswers left on average
SATIRE25 of 2,375
RETAIN28
RETAIL28
ORNATE28
SALINE28

SATIRE is the best start. It checks E, R, A and T, the four letters that turn up most in six-letter answers, plus S and I. For a two-word start, follow it with COLUMN: six new letters (C, O, L, U, M, N), and after both words only about 2 answers fit on average.

Five-letter favorites like CRANE or SLATE don't fit here. Use all six letters on different ones and you get more clues from every guess.

Six-Letter Wordle Tips

Expect a double letter

More than half of the answers (52%) repeat a letter, as in BUTTER, COFFEE and LETTER. In five-letter Wordle it is about one in three. When you are short of letters to try, try a double.

Check the common endings

About 1 answer in 10 ends in -ER (246 words). -LE (165) and -LY (93) come next, and the most common three-letter endings are -TER, -BLE, -DER and -ENT. If E and R both show up yellow, try them at the end.

And the common starts

RE- starts 101 answers, DE- 69 and UN- 59. S is the most common first letter. E is the most common last letter (almost 1 answer in 4), followed by Y and R.

Watch for word families

Some answers differ by a single letter: STRIDE, STRIFE, STRIKE, STRIPE and STRIVE, or BATTER, BETTER, BITTER and BUTTER. When several words fit, don't try them one by one. Play a word that tests several of the letters that differ, even if it can't be the answer.

Turn on Hard Mode for a bigger challenge

In Hard Mode (the ⚙ menu above the board) every guess has to use the hints you have found. Colorblind mode is in the same menu.

Is Six Letters Harder Than Five?

For most people, yes, but not because of the logic. Every guess checks six letters instead of five, and long words have fewer look-alikes. We had a computer play every answer, opening with the best word and then only guessing words that still fit. It needed 3.1 guesses on average with six letters, against 3.6 with five, and never more than 6.

What makes six letters hard is thinking of words that fit. The endings and starts above help with that. Here is how the four word lengths compare:

LengthPossible answersWords you can guessGuessesAnswers with a repeated letterComputer average

Play With Friends or at School

In Friend Battle, pick Hard (6 letters), send the code to a friend and race to solve the same word. For a bigger group or a class, open a Wordle Room and choose 6 letters.

The game runs in the browser, so it works on school Chromebooks, iPads and phones with nothing to install. Teachers can find class ideas on Wordle for the Classroom. Want the classic length? Play Wordle Unlimited with five letters, or step up to 7 Letter Wordle.

Six, the same as regular Wordle. If you run out, you can spend 3 gems on a seventh row.
SATIRE. Tested against all 2,375 answers, it leaves about 25 possible words on average, fewer than any other opener that can also be the answer. RETAIN, RETAIL and ORNATE are close behind. For a two-word start, play SATIRE and then COLUMN.
Most players find it harder because six-letter words are harder to think of. The clues are actually better: each guess checks six letters. A computer that plays carefully needs about 3.1 guesses on average, against 3.6 for five letters.
This page is unlimited, so every game gives you a new random word instead of one puzzle a day. If you want one shared puzzle each day, play Daily Wordle, which uses five letters.
