One code, up to 50 friends, everyone on the same word.

Four ways to play in a room

Pick one per game. You can switch between games in the same room.

Race

Everyone gets the same word at once. Fewer guesses and a faster solve score more. When everybody has finished, the next word starts straight away.

Relaxed

The same words, each player at their own pace. Good for mixed ages, grandparents and anyone who hates a clock.

Knockout

A one-on-one bracket. Two players, one word, first to solve goes through, until one champion is left.

Tournament

Up to 100 players: qualifying words for everyone, then the best go into a knockout. Host your own Wordle tournament.

Which room fits your group?

Two taps and we point you to the right game, from a two-player duel to a 100-player tournament.

Make the game yours

Every setting is open to the host.

Your own words

Type up to 10 words of 4 to 7 letters, each with an optional clue. Names and school vocabulary are fine, even if they are not in the dictionary. Great for birthdays and inside jokes.

4 to 7 letters, easy to hard

Random words in 4, 5, 6 or 7 letters: easy (common letters, no repeats), normal or hard (rare and double letters).

Hard mode

The classic rule: letters you find must be used in your next guesses.

A clock, or none

1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes a word in a race, or no clock at all in Relaxed. Guesses from 4 to 8.

Chat for the family

Players with an account (13+) type messages; everyone sends reactions and quick messages. Bad words are hidden and links removed. The host can turn chat off.

Fun names

One switch gives everyone a friendly name like “Blue Fox 12”, handy with kids and classes.

Ideas for a Wordle game night

Family game night

Relaxed mode with easy words so everyone from 8 to 80 can play, then a Race to finish.

Birthday party

A word list made of the birthday person’s favorite things, each with a clue.

Cousins and friends abroad

A 7-day card keeps the same room, leaderboard and chat all week. Play a few words each evening from home.

Office break

A 2-hour room for a lunch-time Knockout, or a full office Wordle tournament.

Book club or youth group

Words from the book or the topic of the week.

Classroom

Teachers get classrooms free. See Wordle for the classroom.

Room cards and what they cost

Joining a room is always free and needs no account. Hosting one uses a room card, kept in your account like a streak shield. Every new account gets one Single game card free.

Gems come from playing (wins and rewards) or from the Store. The card comes back if you close the room before its first game.

Questions people ask

Can you play Wordle with friends online?

Yes. Open a Wordle Room, share the 5-letter code or link, and your friends join from their own phone or computer. Everyone plays the same word at the same time and the room keeps score.

Is there a multiplayer Wordle?

The New York Times version is single-player. WordlyPlay adds multiplayer: one-on-one Friend Battle, public Battle Royale, the weekend Grand Slam, and private Wordle Rooms for up to 50 people.

Do my friends need an account to join?

No. They open the link or type the code at wordlyplay.com/join and pick a nickname. An account is only needed to host a room (the first game is free) and to type chat messages.

How many people can play in one room?

Up to 50 in a normal room and up to 100 with a Tournament card.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Add up to 10 words of 4 to 7 letters, each with an optional clue. Names and subject words work even if they are not in the dictionary.

Can I choose the word for my friends to guess?

Yes. In a room, pick “My words” and type the words your friends will guess, with a clue for each if you like. You will know the answers, so sit that game out and watch the board, or let a friend type the words for you.

Can 3 people play Wordle together?

Yes. A room works for 3 players or 50. Everyone gets the same word at the same time, and the board ranks all of you, not just two.

Is there a Wordle party game you can play online?

A Wordle Room is the online version: one host, a code on the TV or in the group chat, everyone guessing on their own phone, and a podium at the end of each game.

Can we chat in a room?

Yes. Players with an account (13 and over) can type messages; everyone can send reactions and quick messages. Bad words are hidden, links are removed, and the host can turn chat off or to reactions only.

Is it free?

Joining is free. Hosting uses a room card: every account gets one Single game card free, then cards start at 5 gems. Teachers get classrooms free.

Does it work on a school Chromebook or a phone?

Yes. It runs in the browser on Chromebooks, iPads, Android and iPhone, with nothing to install.

What is the difference between a room and Friend Battle?

Friend Battle is a quick one-on-one duel. A room holds up to 50 people, several modes, your own words, chat and a scoreboard across many games.

What happens when my room card runs out?

The room closes and everyone sees the final results. Open a new room any time, or extend with another card before it ends.
