Search for five letter words starting with C and most sites hand you several hundred. That list is almost entirely useless, because the overwhelming majority of those words can never be the answer.
We checked against the real answer pool. Of the 970 C-words Wordle accepts as a guess, exactly 198 can actually come up as the solution. Those are the only ones worth memorising, and they are all below.
All 198 five letter words starting with C that can be the answer
Grouped by second letter, because that is how you will actually search your memory once you have a green C.
| Start | Count | Words |
|---|---|---|
| CR- | 45 | CRACK, CRAFT, CRAMP, CRANE, CRANK, CRASH, CRASS, CRATE, CRAVE, CRAWL, CRAZE, CRAZY, CREAK, CREAM, CREDO, CREED, CREEK, CREEP, CREME, CREPE, CREPT, CRESS, CREST, CRICK, CRIED, CRIER, CRIME, CRIMP, CRISP, CROAK, CROCK, CRONE, CRONY, CROOK, CROSS, CROUP, CROWD, CROWN, CRUDE, CRUEL, CRUMB, CRUMP, CRUSH, CRUST, CRYPT |
| CH- | 40 | CHAFE, CHAFF, CHAIN, CHAIR, CHALK, CHAMP, CHANT, CHAOS, CHARD, CHARM, CHART, CHASE, CHASM, CHEAP, CHEAT, CHECK, CHEEK, CHEER, CHESS, CHEST, CHICK, CHIDE, CHIEF, CHILD, CHILI, CHILL, CHIME, CHINA, CHIRP, CHOCK, CHOIR, CHOKE, CHORD, CHORE, CHOSE, CHUCK, CHUMP, CHUNK, CHURN, CHUTE |
| CA- | 32 | CABAL, CABBY, CABIN, CABLE, CACAO, CACHE, CACTI, CADDY, CADET, CAGEY, CAIRN, CAMEL, CAMEO, CANAL, CANDY, CANNY, CANOE, CANON, CAPER, CAPUT, CARAT, CARGO, CAROL, CARRY, CARVE, CASTE, CATCH, CATER, CATTY, CAULK, CAUSE, CAVIL |

| CI- | 6 | CIDER, CIGAR, CINCH, CIRCA, CIVIC, CIVIL |
| CE- | 3 | CEASE, CEDAR, CELLO |
| CY- | 3 | CYBER, CYCLE, CYNIC |
Notice how lopsided that is. CR- and CH- alone account for 85 of the 198. If you have a C and nothing else, those two are where the odds live.
The best C word to open with
We scored every valid C-word as an opening guess against all 2,315 possible answers. The measure is simple: after that guess, how many candidate words are left on average? Lower is better.
| Opener | Words left on average | Note |
|---|---|---|
| CRATE | 72.9 | Best C opener there is |
| CARTE | 73.5 | Slightly better than CRANE, less familiar |
| CARET | 75.6 | Same letters as CRATE, worse ordering |
| CRANE | 78.7 | The famous one - and it is beaten |
| CATER | 80.8 | Strong, very common word |
| CARES | 81.8 | Good if you like an S |
| CASTE | 85.4 | Solid, slightly behind the leaders |
The headline: CRATE beats CRANE. Both use the same five high-value letters, but CRATE's arrangement splits the answer pool more evenly - 72.9 words left against 78.7. That is a real edge, and CRANE gets recommended far more often.
For contrast, the worst C openers are COCCO (808.9 left), CIVIC (734.0) and CHUCK (647.5). Repeated letters waste a slot, which is the same failure we documented in the worst Wordle starting words.
It spends five slots on three letters. C, I and V only - with C and I each used twice. You learn about three letters instead of five, and V is rare, so most games it tells you almost nothing. It leaves 734 candidates on average against CRATE's 73. That is ten times worse.
The C words that trap people
These are the answers with the most other answers sitting one letter away. Get down to one of these with two guesses left and you are gambling, not solving.
| Word | Answers one letter away |
|---|---|
| COVER | 9 |
| COWER | 8 |
| CLOCK | 8 |
| CLICK | 8 |
| CLACK | 8 |
| CROCK | 7 |
| CRICK | 7 |
| CLANK | 7 |
The CL_CK family is the nastiest cluster in the whole C range - CLOCK, CLICK and CLACK are mutually one letter apart, and CROCK and CRICK sit next door. If you are holding CL_CK with two guesses left, you are picking from at least three.
C words with a repeated letter
Sixty-four of the 198 - almost exactly a third - repeat a letter. That matches the all-time rate we found across 992 dated answers, so C is not unusual here. It is still the single most common reason people lose.
CABAL, CABBY, CACAO, CACHE, CACTI, CADDY, CANAL, CANNY, CANON, CARAT, CARRY, CATCH, CATTY, CEASE, CELLO, CHAFF, CHECK, CHEEK, CHEER, CHESS, CHICK, CHILI, CHILL, CHOCK, CHUCK, CINCH, CIRCA, CIVIC, CIVIL, CLACK, CLASS, CLICK, CLIFF, CLOCK, CLUCK, COACH, COCOA, COLON, COLOR, COMIC, COMMA, CONCH, CONDO, CONIC, CORER, COUCH, COYLY, CRACK, CRASS, CREED, CREEK, CREEP, CREME, CREPE, CRESS, CRICK, CRIER, CROCK, CROOK, CROSS, CUBIC, CURRY, CYCLE, CYNIC
CA- is only the third-biggest group, with 32 answers, behind CR- (45) and CH- (40). But a confirmed A narrows it hard: you are mostly looking at CABIN, CABLE, CAMEL, CANAL, CANOE, CARGO, CAROL, CATCH and CAUSE. Check for the repeat before you commit - CABAL, CANAL, CACAO and CARAT all double up.
C words with rare letters
Nineteen answers pair C with a J, Q, X, Z, V or W. These are the ones people never guess because the letters feel unlikely:
CARVE, CAVIL, CIVIC, CIVIL, CLOVE, CLOWN, COVEN, COVER, COVET, COVEY, COWER, CRAVE, CRAWL, CRAZE, CRAZY, CROWD, CROWN, CURVE, CURVY
Worth noting there is no C answer containing J, Q or X at all. The rare letters that actually appear with C are V, W and Z - so if you have a C and you are stuck, those three are live and the others are not.

How we built this list
The 198 words come from the official Wordle answer pool of 2,315 solutions, not from a dictionary. That distinction is the whole point: a dictionary gives you CLYPE, CRENA and CROZE, which Wordle will never use as an answer and which only waste your time.
Opener scores were computed by playing every valid C-word against all 2,315 answers, grouping the results by the exact green/yellow/grey pattern produced, and averaging how many candidates survive. Trap counts are the number of other answers reachable by changing exactly one letter.
Common questions
Wordle accepts about 970 five-letter C-words as valid guesses, but only 198 of them can ever be the answer. The other roughly 770 are guess-only.
CRATE. Measured against all 2,315 answers it leaves 72.9 candidates on average, beating the more famous CRANE at 78.7.
Sixty-four of the 198 possible answers repeat a letter, including CADDY, CANNY, CATCH, CHECK, CHEEK, CLASS, CREEK and CURRY. That is about one in three. We list every double-letter answer, not just the C ones, in the complete double-letter list.
COVER, which has nine other possible answers exactly one letter away. The CLOCK / CLICK / CLACK cluster is close behind, with eight each.
