Experienced Wordle players often solve backwards. Instead of building the word from left to right, they identify the ending first — then fill in the beginning. This works because English word endings are surprisingly predictable. Certain letter combinations appear at the end of five-letter words far more often than others.
Master these endings and you'll immediately recognize partial patterns mid-game.
The -IGHT Family
One of Wordle's most infamous endings. When you discover _IGHT, you face a classic Wordle dilemma: there are MANY words that fit.
Words: FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT, WIGHT
The Trap: With 7+ candidates sharing the same ending, guessing one-by-one uses too many guesses. Instead, use an elimination word that tests multiple starting consonants. Example: FILMS tests F, L, M — potentially eliminating FIGHT, LIGHT, and MIGHT in one shot.
The -OUND Family
Another high-frequency ending with multiple candidates.
Words: BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND, WOUND
Strategy: Same approach as IGHT — use an elimination word. FIRST tests F, I, R, S, T — which can eliminate FOUND, ROUND, and SOUND simultaneously.
The -ATCH Family
Words: BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCH, WATCH
Strategy: Again, many candidates. Test starting consonants with something like CLIMB (C, L, M, B) to narrow down.
The -ASTE / -ASTE Family
Words: BASTE, HASTE, PASTE, TASTE, WASTE
Strategy: Fewer candidates — you might solve directly on your next guess.
The -TION Problem
Here's a wrinkle: -TION is incredibly common in English, but 5-letter words ending in -TION are rare because TION itself is 4 letters, leaving only 1 letter for the beginning. Valid options: ACTION (6 letters — too long!), OPTION (6 letters — nope).
In practice, -TION almost never appears as a Wordle ending because most -TION words are 6+ letters. But -TION-like patterns DO appear: TRAIN, STAIN, GRAIN — the -AIN ending is the 5-letter cousin of -TION.

How to Use Ending Knowledge
- After guess 2: Check if your green/yellow letters form a recognizable ending
- If yes: Mentally recall the word family for that ending
- Filter: Cross-reference with your gray letters to eliminate impossible candidates
- Decide: Few candidates? Go for the solve. Many candidates? Use an elimination word.
